Original Numenera Species- 8th Worlders

Description

I am working on GMing a Numenera game; and I recently decided to start exploring some of my ideas for what the old worlds of the Ninth World are. This is a species that I have designed as one of the most powerful "Eighth Worlders."

This species belongs to and is a creation of me. Please do not use them without permission.

Species Name: Tsat'si Stchi

Other Names: 8th Worlder

Federation Status: Allied

Homeworld: Ninth World (Formerly)

Atmosphere Type: Type I: Normal

Universal Location: Callenvarr Galaxy

Range: Federation Limited; Formerly Ninth World

Primary Class:  Natural Mollusca

Population Class: Non-Species/Near Extinct: Less than 50 individuals

Intelligence Class: Class 6: Self-aware; building species

Technology Tier: Tier 2: Interstellar (Former)

Lifespan: 100 SFP

Diet: Carnivorous

Average Height of Adult: 8 feet

Coloration: 8th Worlders typically have green skin, with the tips of their tentacles being a darker hue, while the underside of their limbs are a lighter color. Flat coloration is common, however some members have some limited striping or spotting.

Physical Description: 8th Worlders have cylindrical bodies with four specialized, sensory tentacles on their upper half, five manipulator tentacles growing down their sides, and six ambulatory tentacles grow from their lower half. The four tentacles growing from their backs are lined with suction cups and tipped with finger-like growths. The two upper pairs of tentacles that grow along their bellies are short and lined with clawed suction cups, while the lower pair are smooth and strong. Two of their sensory tentacles are lined with teeth and tasting cells, and are tipped with a flower-shaped smelling organ. The other pair of sensory tentacles are lined with individually movable ears which commonly twitch and redirect themselves in order to pin point sounds. In their natural form, 8th Worlders look to be little more than a mass of writing tentacles,  but those of the Alliance, and those rare historical individuals that respected and dealt with bipedal beings, can contort their bodies to be better understandable by others. In this form, they press their sensory tentacles together, forming a head, fold their belly tentacles against their bodies, and press their ambulatory tentacles together to form legs and a tail.

Anatomical Specialties: The bellies of 8th Worlders appear to be split down the middle, and this is interpreted by many to be a mouth of some kind. However, this is misinformed. The 8th Worlders have one mouth at the base of their sensory tentacles, and the slit along their ventral surface is a reproductive anatomical structure. This slit is the opening to a pouch in which 8th Worlders store their soft shelled eggs, and eventually their developing young. The four upper tentacles, with their claws, allow the 8th Worlders to restrain slaves or prey along the slit, providing food for their young. This is was a common fate for slaves in the hey-day of the species.

Sexual Dimorphism: N/A

Age of Sexual Maturity: 60 SFP

Gestation Period: 8th Worlders carry their developing young for about a year before they are developed enough to be released into nurseries where they are raised and fed by hordes of slaves, or, within the Federation, by their parents and their crèches.

Development/Breeding: Once 8th Worlders reach sexual maturity their bodies will produce a clutch of up to 10 eggs every 2 SFPs. These eggs develop within the pouches of mature individuals, and if they are to grow into offspring, they must be fertilized by another individual. Unfertilized eggs may simply be plucked out of the 8th Worlder's belly and discarded. Similarly, fertilized eggs can be pulled from individuals as punishment and destroyed- however, this was a rare occurrence as 8th Worlders are strongly connected to their children, and even the killing of another's offspring is painful to them.

Once the eggs hatch, the young larval form of the 8th Worlder's offspring will remain in the pouch for several months, during which time they will be fed living meat by their maternal parent. After this time, they are released into a nursery where they will mingle with other offspring and be raised by a relatively large group of adults. Among all their short comings, 8th Worlders are known to be exceptionally soft-hearted towards children, and in fact, they forced their slaves to conceal their young from them, as they cannot bare to be cruel to even the young of other species.

Senses: 8th Worlders have no sense of sight, however their sense of smell, taste, hearing and touch are highly sensitive. Their hearing is so sensitive, in fact, that they use echolocation as a way of picturing the world, and communicating with one another. Their sense of smell allows them to track scents through the darkness. Finally, their many tentacles are extremely sensitive to touch, so much so that their written language is made up by braille like forms that are found throughout their ancient cities.

Emotions: Standard

Communication: Vocal. 8th Worlders do not have vocal cords, but instead have two sound producing organs within their smell/tasting tentacles. They are able to produce a wide range of sounds with these organs. They use them to produce sounds used for echolocation, and while they cannot form words in the traditional sense, they are able to produce sounds that can vibrate the bones and ear structures of other species in order to communicate through sounds. Between each other, they communicate through the formation of words in this way, and through the sharing of painted echolocation images that they share with one another. When communicating with other species, they often express discontent with the limitations of what they are able to share without this ability.

Species Abilities: N/A

Social Organization: Loose hierarchy

Religion: The religion of the 8th Worlders have been long lost to time, and it may be that the species lost their religious tendencies long before the fall of their empire and the near-extinction of their species.

Culture: The old culture of the 8th Worlders revolved around slave labor, and their strange fascination with war and gladiatorial battles. In their deep history, the species was known for its tendency to invade and enslave other worlds, but near their fall their reach receded into the Ninth World.

They lived in a system of city-states, ruled by single individuals who were known to rise to power through machinations and deceit. It does not appear that democracy was a political system that could evolve naturally within this species; although, oddly, it is their natural love for young creatures which kept most rulers from doing anything to harm their own people.  Most 8th Worlders are also naturally cooperative with one another, and those that they find reason to respect.

They were traditionally a xenophodic species, and this allowed them to not only enslave other species, but bend their biology to their wills. This tradition is most apparent in the degraded species known on the Ninth World as the Varakith.

Little more is known of the ancient 8th Worlder culture than this; war has ruined most of their old cities to the point that little more can be learned, although research is on-going in the Black Riage.

Relations: Traditionally, this species had an antagonistic relationship with all other sentients, but they are widely unknown now, and within the Federation they have developed positive relations with others. They are currently known for their exceptional ability for cooperation and their inherent creativity.

History: The true homeworld of the 8th Worlders is unknown, but what evidence has been found about them suggests that they may have originated on the planet now known as the Ninth World. It is possible that they were a creation of the 7th Worlders, as their genetic material contains evidence of manipulation- but the 8th Worlders themselves were known for their love of genetic manipulation, so the origins of this are unknown.

Within the time span of the 8th World, the 8th Worlders ruled their home planet with an iron fist, subjugating all of the sentient species on their own world, and eventually developing the technology to expand their empire out by several solar systems. At this time, it appears that the larger empires in this sector of the universe had failed and shrunken in on themselves. The 8th Worlders were met only by planet-bound sentients which they battled into submission and then turned into new, obedient species on the Ninth World.

As the arrogance of the species grew, their interest in the outer worlds faded and their empire slowly fell apart. Eventually, even their city-states lost contact with one another, and their slaves revolted against them- led by the humans that the 8th Worlders had brought to the planet. They were driven to extinction on their homeworld, and all but forgotten. The Federation has only recently gained access to their genetic material and have begun work to bring back the fading species within their own ranks.
